Teaching Philosophy

As an educator deeply rooted in moral principles and values, I firmly believe that a teacher's ultimate goal is to make themselves progressively unnecessary, as beautifully articulated by W.B. Yeats. Throughout my diverse roles as a classroom teacher, computer, STEM, and Library teacher, after-school coordinator, homeschool educator and coordinator, and iPad manager/tech liaison, I have come to understand that proper education extends far beyond mere lectures in the classroom. It's about guiding students toward taking ownership of their own learning journey, all while recognizing and nurturing their individuality.

Each student possesses unique learning needs and preferences—some thrive through traditional reading and study, while others excel in hands-on activities or interactive games. As an educator, I am responsible for equipping all students with the tools necessary for maximum learning, so I craft my lessons to be multimodal, incorporating diverse resources such as reading materials, video clips, and interactive games like Blooket, Jeopardy, and Kahoot. Every aspect of my teaching is meticulously aligned with learning goals, ensuring that each student has the opportunity to learn according to their strengths and preferences.

I am dedicated to motivating students to learn and empowering them to think critically. Incorporating Socratic questioning into my teaching style, honed through years of homeschooling in a classical framework, I foster an environment where students are encouraged to engage in deep, meaningful discussions. Through positive reinforcement and a safe, nurturing atmosphere, I've witnessed firsthand how children are inspired to participate actively in Socratic dialogue.

My overarching goals for students extend beyond mere academic achievement; I aim to cultivate within them a lifelong love for learning and the skills necessary to become independent, self-directed learners. This begins by instilling a strong work ethic and providing varied opportunities for mastery practice, whether through games, digital platforms like Google Forms, or creative activities like songs and rhymes. Moreover, I guide students toward questioning and discovery, fostering their curiosity and empowering them to seek knowledge and truth independently. By nurturing a culture of inquiry and understanding, we lay the foundation for lifelong learning and personal growth.
